Sound Careers in Healthcare 2023 Impact Report
The 2023 Sound Careers in Healthcare (SCIH) was a two-day hybrid event hosting over 800+ students from 9-12th graders in King, Pierce, and Snohomish Counties, with particular emphasis on BIPOC, first-generation, and/or low-income students. For the 1st day, the Healthcare Industry Leadership Table (HILT) and the University of Washington’s Health Professions Recruitment Collaborative (e.g. Doctors for a Day) hosted a hands-on healthcare career exploration fair for 500+ students at the UW Husky Union Building. For the 2nd day, Kaiser Permanente and HILT hosted an interactive livestream with over 300+ students at the Kaiser Permanente Bellevue campus.
Day 1: SCIH in-person fair
This day offered 15 resource tables from healthcare organizations, 15 resource tables from community & education organizations, and 8 hands-on sections in the fields of nursing, medicine, allied health, pediatrics, rehab, mental & behavioral health, laboratory medical sciences & research, and pharmacy. Students rotated through each section to explore the variety of options available in healthcare.
Day 2: SCIH Livestream
This day offered a pre-recorded medical case where Kaiser professionals treated a patient with stomach pain, a Kahoot/virtual quiz around the medical case, interviews with healthcare professionals, and a panel discussion of HR leaders from 4 healthcare employers. Students viewed the livestream from their classroom and asked questions to explore the variety of options available in healthcare.
Impact
813 students attended SCIH 2023. Students were racially and geographically diverse (i.e. 78% were BIPOC, 35% were from King, 29% were from Pierce, and 36% were from Snohomish). A total of 25 high schools from 9 school districts in the tri-county region were in attendance. In both days, not only did the event increase student attendees’ understanding of healthcare careers & college options, but most planned to pursue a job in the industry.
